Ortho Bionomy® is an osteopath-developed system of returning the body to homeostasis, gently, by utilizing the body's proprioceptive reflexes. Created by Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls, practitioners communicate with the client's nervous system with gentle positioning, or movements so your body can reorganize its own patterns to return to a better relationship with itself. Feels like magic, but is sophisticated, attuned communication. Just like listening and speaking calmly can be more effective than screaming. This "swiss army knife" of principle-based techniques addresses the musculoskeletal system, organs, fluids, fascia, and movement patterns with only as much force as necessary (which isn't much!). What to expect in a session: Ortho Bionomy is a fully-clothed technique, so come wearing loose, comfortable clothes. A standing, or moving assessment will be done during intake, and techniques may be performed in whatever position creates the most comfort for the area being addressed.
Craniosacral Therapy, created by osteopath John Upledger, is a gentle method of evaluating and facilitating the movement of the cranio-sacral system of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid within. It requires very light touch, and has been shown to benefit the functioning of the central nervous system, and thereby the many other body systems directly affected (innervated) by the nervous system. For more information on specific ailments, please visit __ for links to journal articles. What do expect in a session: Craniosacral Therapy is performed through clothing, so wear comfortable, loose clothing. A series of assessments for the craniosacral system are done lying down, and then areas of imbalance are addressed so that a balanced flow of movement and fluids may be reached. The majority of this treatment takes place at the head.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, developed by Dr Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s, is a physical technique of manually moving lymph fluids to assist in waste management and inflammation. The movements involve applying light pressure, as the lymphatic system is located in a shallow area in the dermis layer of the skin. It is especially helpful in reducing fluid congestion in pregnancy. It also promotes healing time post injury. It is a gentle, relaxing therapy. What do expect in a session: Because the lymphatic system is largely within the skin, this treatment is performed without clothes, similar to a Swedish/therapeutic massage. You will be covered in linens except for the area of the body being worked on at that time (i.e. leg, neck, abdomen). This treatment does include abdominal massage, as many lymph vessels are in the abdomen.
Shiatsu is a Japanese massage utilizing the same meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It traditionally is performed on a mat, but can also be performed on a massage table. The theory and principles are to create balance of energy by tonifying yin, or empty energy areas, and dispelling yang, or tense areas by following the direction patterns of the meridians. Assessments are done via tongue, pulse, and abdominal mapping. This massage is relaxing, and can have moments of discomfort as tension is addressed.
Sports Massage includes any number of soft tissue, myofascial release, neuromuscular, trigger point, tui na, shiatsu, cupping, gua-sha, assisted stretching, and deep tissue techniques in order to prepare for, or recover the body from a specific exercise. This therapy is usually provided before or directly after a sporting event. It can have elements of on-skin techniques, or be done through clothing. It is best to wear or bring shorts and a sports bra, and have loose comfortable clothing available just in case. I will typically include some Ortho Bionomy® and corrective exercises to appointments that are not within the week of an event. Taping may also be used to protect any areas from injury, or for recovery.
What pre and post natal massages are like with me: Your comfort is key! We can do any technique you find most needed based on your needs that day, whether that's working clothed like OB, CST, and Shiatsu, or on-skin techniques like swedish and manual lymph drainage. I work with most pre-natal clients in the side-lying position, and always use lymphatic drainage for legs the farther along in weeks you are. As a trained labor assistant, I do a fair amount of posture and ergonomics education so baby has room to be positioned optimally. I tend to work with women from pre-conception through recovery, and am available for doula/labor assistant work by request. There's a litany of hands-on and movement techniques that can help with pain-management in labor. As so much of your body and health becomes your baby's foundation, I love working with women to be as comfortable, stress and pain-free as possible. I also take great pride in getting pregnant women to fall asleep during a treatment when sleep is hard to come by. For post-natal recovery appointments, I utilize gentle visceral manipulation, to assist organs to their new space, and spend a focus on upper-body posture as you grow accustomed to carrying an ever-growing baby. Newborn babies are welcome in post-natal appointments.
